Rectangular capes hanging from a collar or gathered at
the neckline, trapeze sheaths and skirts over mint-green leggings and
body suits: Véronique Branquinho’s garments have a Cubist
collage quality, with their flat shapes creating volume distortions without
actually adding thickness. Dry or light fabrics, geometric patterns; a
putty, slate, clay and chalk palette; the odd inlay of macramé
embroidered: Branquinho displays her art in an introverted vocabulary
laced with a quivering sensuality of diagonal, nearly faded knife-pleats,
clavicle-grazing décolletages and long glove-sleeves masking the
arms, all the better to attract the eye…
