Défilés on line Hussein Chalayan ....at France-Amérique Denyse Beaulieu / photos : Vincent Lappartient Conceptual, as always. So much so that the research of this young – 34 years old – designer will soon be exhibited in a retrospective at the Groningen Museum in the Netherlands, as of April 24th. Hussein Chalayan supplied highly complex explanations on the origins of the carpet motifs from which he fashioned matriochka coats encasing the head and shoulders of his models, apparently based on a sonic decoding of DNA sequences… Paradoxically, in the opulent surroundings of the private mansion where he presented his collection, he sent out sensuous garments, borrowing his materials – Chantilly lace, ostrich feathers, chiffon – and shapes – Balenciaga inspired volumes – from haute couture codes. As though Hussein Chalayan had to trick himself into giving in to his own desire for fashion and elegance, by screening it through an experimental discourse. The result is truly, movingly mature. And simply beautiful.
