The Poiret auction sale at Drouot
Richelieu
« L’Univers de Denise et Paul Poiret, 1905-1928 »
On May 10-11 2005, the auction sale of the Denise and Paul Poiret collection
– over 600 pieces preserved by their direct heirs -- set two new
world records, under the hammer of Maître Audap. This exceptional
sale attracted over 7000 visitors and every item was bought, notably to
the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Fashion Institute,
to the Fashion Institute of Technology (NY), the Fine Art Museum of San
Francisco (F.A.M.S.F.), the Musée de Bruxelles, the Museo de la
Moda in Chile, the Louis Vuitton Museum, the Bibliothèque Forney
in Paris, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Musée
Galliera, also in Paris.
The highest bid (131 648 €) was set for a 1914 car coat in a thick
ivory linen and silk cloth, woven by Rodier. This is a world record for
a Haute Couture garment. Evening shoes designed by Guy Arnoux and made
by Perugia especially for Mrs Paul Poiret in 1924 were sold for 40 912
€, another world record for shoes.
